Trabajó desde 1981 como profesora en el Departamento de Historia y Filosofía de la Ciencia de la Universidad de Indiana y actualmente es profesora emérita. Fue editora jefe de la revista Philosophy of Science (1999-2004), fue nombrada miembro en 1999 por la Asociación Americana para el Avance de la Ciencia y editora jefe de The New Dictionary of Scientific Biography (2004-2008).
