Premio Stirling

Summary

El Premio Stirling del Real Instituto de Arquitectos Británicos (del inglés: Royal Institute of British Architects Stirling Prize) es un premio británico a la excelencia en la arquitectura. Se llama así en honor al arquitecto James Stirling y es organizado y otorgado anualmente por el Real Instituto de Arquitectos Británicos (RIBA). Los galardonados con el Premio Stirling reciben un estipendio de GB £ 20.000.

El Premio Stirling es concedido a los «arquitectos del edificio que haya supuesto la mayor contribución a la arquitectura británica el año anterior». Los arquitectos premiados deben ser miembros del RIBA, pero el edificio premiado puede estar en cualquier lugar de la Unión Europea.

El premio fue fundado en 1996, y es considerado el premio más prestigioso de arquitectura en el Reino Unido. Se publicita como el equivalente arquitectónico del Booker Prize y el Turner Prize. La ceremonia de presentación es televisada por Channel 4 y el premio es patrocinado por Architects Journal. Seis edificios preseleccionados son escogidos a partir de una lista larga de edificios que han recibido un premio del RIBA. Estos premios se otorgan a los edificios que muestran «altos estándares arquitectónicos y una contribución sustancial al entorno local». En 2003, 70 de tales edificios recibieron premios del RIBA y con ellos se hizo la lista larga .

Además del premio Stirling, se otorgan otros siete premios del RIBA a los edificios de la lista larga. En 2003, fueron: Premio Lawrence Stephen, Cliente del Año (RIBA Client of the Year), Sostenibilidad Diario RIBA (RIBA Journal Sustainability Award), Conservación Corona Estatal (Crown Estate Conservation Award), Primer Edificio del Diario de Arquitectos (The Architects’ Journal First Building Award) y Accesibilidad del Fideicomiso ADAPT (ADAPT Trust Access Award).

En los años anteriores a 1996, el premio fue conocido como el "Edificio del Año" ("Building of the Year Award").
