Prout se especializó en el orden de insectos Lepidoptera, especialmente en las polillas geómetras, en los que era una autoridad destacada.[1]​ Contribuyó con las secciones sobre polillas geómetras en Genera Insectorum de Philogène Wytsman y en The Macrolepidoptera of the World, la versión en inglés de Die Gross-Schmetterlinge der Erde de Adalbert Seitz.[2]​ Los apuntes, diarios y publicaciones de Prout formaron la base de los índices de tarjetas Geometridae del Museo de Historia Natural, el entonces Museo Británico (Historia Natural). Fue secretario de la Sociedad de Historia Natural del Norte de Londres y trabajó en asociación con el Museo de Historia Natural de Tring.[3]​

No debe confundirse con su hermana Alice Ellen Prout, quien fue miembro de la Sociedad Entomológica de Londres.[4]​[5]​[6]​ Prout fue un destacado musicólogo, hijo del compositor Ebenezer Prout.[3]​[1]​
